At Least 14 Killed After Landslides In Brazil

By: Matt Carr & Ryan Jakhadi

14 people have been killed in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro after heavy rain pounded the region and triggered landslides. A father and his 8 children were hit by a landslide in the town of Paraty, with only one child surviving, who was then transported to a hospital. The landslides also displaced many people, with the Paraty Mayor stating, “We have more than 70 homeless families. We are providing shelters and renting hostels for these people.” Many others were killed and injured throughout the state, both due to flooding and landslides. This is not the first time Rio de Janeiro has faced this type of natural disaster, as in February 2022, the state also faced heavy rains resulting in mudslides that killed 24 people.
