Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear’s musical inspired by the popular Netflix series “Bridgerton”, brought home the 2022 Grammy for best musical theatre album. The project was the first to win a Grammy due to popularity gained on TikTok, even beating musical theatre icon Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cinderella,” and a staged recording of “Les Misérables”. Barlow and Bear have even become the youngest nominees for the musical theatre album category.
The release of the first season of “Bridgerton” left quarantined fans hungry for more of the Ton society. The duo began to garner millions of views for song demos on TikTok, starting in early 2021, which eventually lead to the release a 15-song album in September. The app allows for smaller creators to gain an audience without the backing of a traditional label. Future prestigious ceremonies can expect to see more rising artists that garnered success on TikTok.
