Defamation Trial Held Between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

A defamation trial is being held in Virginia three years after actor, Johnny Depp, sued ex-wife, Amber Heard. The trial started on April 12th. The case is expected to last approximately 6 weeks.

In 2016, Heard accused Depp of bruising her face with a phone and was granted a restraining order from the actor. She had also written in her application for the restraining order that Depp had been verbally and physically abusive towards her throughout their relationship. She later wrote an op-ed in 2018, claiming she was a “public figure representing domestic abuse”.

Depp filed a lawsuit against Heard in 2019 over the article she had written and over the allegations against him. The lawsuit called the allegations an “elaborate hoax,” and his former lawyer, Adam Walden, told The Daily Mail that the situation was an “abuse hoax”. Heard filed a countersuit against Depp claiming that him and his former lawyer had attempted “to destroy and defame Ms. Heard in the press.”

Depp has testified that he has never struck Heard and that she was the aggressor in the relationship. He also recounts the time that she had thrown a bottle at him and that “the tip of [his] finger had been severed and [he] was looking directly at [his] bone sticking out.”

Heard is still expected to testify.
