At the 94th Academy Award show on Sunday night, Will Smith walked up on stage and slapped Chris Rock after Rock made a G.I. Jane joke towards Jada Pinkett Smith. While presenting the award for best documentary feature, Rock teased, “Jada I love you, 'G.I. Jane 2,' can't wait to see it." Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes at the comment while Will Smith appeared to be laughing. It appears that once Smith saw his wife’s reaction, he stormed on stage and slapped Rock across the face. After walking off of the stage, Smith yelled, "Keep my wife's name out of your [expletive] mouth!"
Smith later won the award for best actor. In a tearful acceptance speech, Smith reflected on the fact that his character, Richard Williams, was a protector of his family. He stated that he was being called on “to love people and to protect people". He also apologized to both the Academy and his fellow nominees, but there was no mention of Rock. “Even though Chris made an inappropriate joke about Wills wife, he could have waited until after the ceremony to talk to him ,especially since he was nominated best actor”(Audrey Ohrenstein,10)
Smith has since apologized for the event in an Instagram post claiming that his actions “were not indicative of the man [he wants] to be,” and believed that his behavior was “unacceptable and inexcusable.”
